In the United States and throughout the world, health care is undergoing a transformation. It is a reaction to the broad recognition that the current system – such as it is – is unsustainable. The clear solution is to increase the value of care: improving patient outcomes while containing, if not reducing, costs. Breakthroughs, especially in genomics, promise to deepen understanding of diseases and ways to combat them. But all stakeholders – governments, consumers, insurers, employers and providers themselves – realize that scientific advances alone will not suffice.
